The Hospice of Lancaster County Labor Day Auction is one of Pennsylvania's premier benefit sales; in 2009 it generated $356,000 to support individuals and families coping with end of life and loss. Thousands of items will be sold simultaneously in multiple arenas both days. This auction is rare for blending an "English" event with one where the best Pennsylvania Dutch food is prepared on-site by the Lancaster County Amish community.

CyloOn Saturday, Sept. 4, gift certificates and a variety of merchandise will be featured in the live auction area. Saturday's events will include a used item auction, as well as even more new items. On Monday, Sept. 6, simultaneous auctions will occur between 8:30 a.m. and 6:00 p.m.

A highlight of the sale happens on Labor Day with the Win-Some-Wheels raffle drawing for a 2010 Harley-Davidson FXD Dyna Super Glide motorcycle at 2:00 p.m. followed by a drawing for a 2010 Mustang at 4:00 p.m. Raffle tickets are available at the event and in advance at Hospice of Lancaster County, at community events throughout the summer and at www.hospiceoflancaster.org.

Amish crowdAmish Community Joins Hospice Community for Labor Day Auction

An Amish woman from Gap, Pa. recalls clearly how Hospice of Lancaster County cared for her parents. "One particular nurse cared for my mother for six months," she says. "She explained how Hospice of Lancaster County provided services regardless of finances, and the organization was able to do this because of fundraisers like the Labor Day Auction and other community support."

Because she was so grateful for how Hospice of Lancaster County cared for her loved ones, the woman and her family decided to support the Labor Day Auction. Seven years ago, the family started by selling baked goods. Two of her nephews-John and Abner Glick-also volunteered as auctioneers that first year.

Since then, the family's support has grown to include more than 100 members of the Amish community, who organize and prepare food that is sold during the entire two days of the Auction. "We couldn't do it without everyone's help. We know that Hospice does a good job and that's what gets us going," says John Glick, who plans the meals for the Auction and coordinates the volunteers.

Amish kidsThe Amish prepare breakfast on both days of the Auction, including made-to-order omelets and delicious breakfast logs (bacon, egg and cheese baked inside homemade pretzel dough), as well as authentic Pennsylvania Dutch fare for the rest of the event.

On behalf of the Labor Day Auction Committee, the Amish solicit businesses and other vendors to donate food and other supplies. "One person is in charge of each aspect of the menu, like the French fries or the barbecue," John says. 'That person is responsible for securing the food and making sure people are there to prepare the items that day." Last year, more than 270 pounds of pork barbecue alone were donated.

Each year, John and his family expand the menu to include even more delicious dishes; strawberry lemonade will be available for this year's event.
